With the new PS3 the Bluray disc or BD will become more mainstream. You can already buy bluray movies and blu-ray players in the US. In the UK they are newer but are soon also going to become mainstream.
The competing technology is the high definition dvd, but it may be blu-ray that wins out in the end. Time will tell as per usual. VHS won out over Beta video format, so it's not always the best that wins, because Beta was actually better.
